NES
2 Player
RacingYes, yes I know what you're thinking, "But gimmethebaawl, real power players don't play unlicensed games, they are bad for your NES!!" Well, Billy I have some news for you. Unlicensed games will not hurt your precious toaster or toploader, and in fact, many of them are quality games that deserve to be recognized and played right along with the "greys". However many of them most certainly are NOT. Nintendo may not have been totally stupid in not letting some companies make games for them. Like from people like Active Enterprises, or Color Dreams, etc. But I do know they dropped the ball by not licensing more of Tengen's games. Tengen made some pretty good games in its time, like RBI Baseball, Pacman, Alien Syndrome, Tetris, and Gauntlet, to name a few. Super Sprint is also one of these games because it is beautiful in its simplicity.
There isn't much story to this game so I will make one up: Your name is Jack. Jack Mehoff. Your cocker spaniel recently had to undergo surgery for repeated ass poundings, and in order to pay the vet bills for his ass transplant, you join the F1 circuit hoping to get enough cash to pay for a stainless steel ass for your dog so you can pound his ass some more. uhhhhhh... sorry.
Graphics: Eh. I can't say much about the graphics, but I can say that they don't totally suck, but they are by no means great. The cars all look the same except for colors, and the tracks dont have a whole lot of detail, save a few trees on the sides. The good things about the graphics is that you know what everything is and there isn't a whole lot of confusion. Granted they are simple, but it gets the job done. I do like the graphics in the part after you win the race. Not too shabby.
Sound: There is not a whole lot of music in this game, and the sound effects get kind of annoying after a while. During the race, there is just the humming of the engines and that gets old pretty quick, but during the screen after you win a race, they have a neat tune, which is the best in the game. I think the Tengen programmers must have spent more time on that one screen than the rest of the game. Those crazy Tengen people...
Control: The control in this game is reminiscent of Ivan "Ironman" Stewart's Super Off Road. I like this style and I think that it suits the game well. It makes for fun gameplay that doesn't get old very quickly. One thing I like about this game is that you can get wrenches to buy new parts for your car and improve it. Features like this are essential in any racing game, and those bad boys at Tengen knew it. Also, they have obstacles n the courses like cross-overs, tornadoes, and holes in the wall.
Frustration: Damn that white car!! DAMN IT ALL TO HELL!!!!! ....breathe.... okay. The white car cheats. Just like every other racing game there is, they cheat, you should've expected that. But it cheats BAD and it makes me want to throw a controller at someone. One thing that is really frustrating is when you blow up into the walls and the other cars completely smoke you. that really gets me mad at the game because it is so DAMN STUPID!!! Otherwise, this game isn't that frustrating. The first few levels are pretty easy, but it gets tough pretty quickly. This game is great for just kicking back and doing a little racing to see how far you can get. I definitely recommend it. Super Sprint is so much more fun if you have two players. It truly is a great simultaneous 2 player game, rivaling the likes of Blades of Steel or TMNT 2.
......BOTTOM LINE: I love this game. Some people may not agree with me, but they can go to hell. This game may not excel in every category but it sure is fun, and that's all that really matters to me. I wouldnt pay more than 4 bucks for this game, but it is definitely worth picking up. I strongly recommend this game if your in to some hot, steamy, sweaty two player racing action!
