Kemco isn't known for making phenomenal games, but every once in a while, they pull out a gem or two to pay the bills. Such games include Spy vs. Spy, Rocket Ranger, and Snoopy Silly Sports. Okay I'm just kidding, everybody knows that Kemco has never made a halfway decent game. But, don't judge this book by its cover! Even the worst companies make some good games at least once. Is Rescue: The Embassy Mission one of these games? I will let you judge for yourself, but in my humble opinion, no. The thing is, though, this game is probably one of the most average games I have ever seen. It is not great, but it doesn't completely suck.
If you can read, the storyline for this game is pretty much self explanatory, but for those who need picture menus at McDonalds, (Then how are you reading this?) here it is. The US embassy in somewhere or another has been overrun by terrorists, so the government employs you and your team of infiltrators to get inside the embassy, free the hostages and whack all the terrorist bastards. The first part of the game consists of choosing your team member and placing them in strategic points along the perimeter of the embassy in order to snipe terrorists in the window. After that, your team members on the roof drop into the embassy and you enter a 3-D setting where you go around shooting terrorists and rescuing hostages. Then... nothing. After that, the game ends. That's it. The first I played this on the highest difficulty, it took me 15 minutes. Not a very long game, by any means.
Graphics: The graphics aren't too bad in this game, but they aren't spectacular, either. You can generally tell what everything is in the game, but you would think that since this is such a small game the might have spent more time in the graphics, but.... The backgrounds in the 3D part are annoying, but all around they aren't that bad. I did like the part when you are dodging the spotlights, I think they drew that stuff up pretty well. It is your standard NES style for the time.
Sound: The sound is not that good in this game. It consists of annoying little beeps and buzzes that don't seem to have any rhyme or reason at all. However, some of the sound , as annoying as it may be, suits the moment, like the spotlight part. I strongly recommend playing something in the old CD player while playing this game. Rap, rock, polka, death metal, gay bar music, or elevator music, go ahead and see what happens.
Control: Control is not this game's strong suit. The reaction time from when you press the button to when your player does what you told him to do on the spotlight part is too long. This can get pretty annoying, especially on the harder settings. Other than that, the control works pretty well. On the sniper part, you can control your shot quite well, and also on the part where you drop in through the window, nice control is necessary, and while not spectacular, it gets the job done.
Frustration: If you don't play your cards right, the rope dropper part can be frustrating, but if you get the controller movements down, it is a cinch. This game is really easy though. I could beat it on the hardest level in 30 minutes. This is a good game to pick up if you want to have a little fun for a really short time. Don't get me wrong, I do like this game, it is pretty fun up until it ends, which comes wayyyy to soon. Believe me you won't break any controllers on this one, unless you really really really suck at games.
......BOTTOM LINE: An okay game. Average in almost every category, not excelling in anything, not failing at anything. A good game if you just want to pick it up for the hell of it. It is a pretty fun game though, too bad they made it TOO DAMN SHORT. Kemco ruined their chances on a winner here. This game could have been great, but it was doomed from the beginning. Kinda like drug addict pro atheletes... but that's a totally different topic.
